I just read on SI.com that Adam Wainwright injured his throwing elbow and Cards' GM John Mozeliak said Wednesday that "things do not look encouraging". Very shitty news if he's hurt bad.

I've been reading that people are expecting TJ surgery, and even if it's not that bad, then he'll miss a couple months. At least our Padres can stash him on the DL for a discount next year. If you place him on the DL he doesn't cost you money.

He needs to officially be put on the real-life DL first.

If he's on the DL, he's still on your roster. How do you not have to pay them?

Because we have no roster size limit, basically allowing him to free up the salary allows him to grab a free agent to play in his stead while not putting him over cap. If it's determined that he's out all year he can go an extra step and make a trade or if he's moved to the DL (as determined by Yahoo!) while we're still in free agency he can try to sign a pitcher to fill in for Wainwright. He would only be free until he is removed from the Yahoo's DL listing, then that $13 salary will be re-added and penalties may happen if the Padres go over his cap limit because of it.

Well apparently Tommy John is basically inevitable, so I hope they make this move soon so I can make a move during free agency. If not, I'll probably be looking to trade prospects for an unwanted contract.

I've decided to allow the Padres to go ahead and place Wainwright on the DL. The reason for this is that we know he's undergoing season ending surgery, Yahoo! is notoriously slow to update for guys in situations like this, it's still the pre-season and the Padres have a chance to actually do something about the situation. Had this been during the season (when he would have had to put Wainwright on his actual Yahoo! DL) I would not have allowed it.
This does carry a warning though, if in the future a player is in a similar rut, if they do some how manage to come back before the season is over they must be immediately rostered (it goes for this situation too, however, it's unlikely that Wainwright will be able to make it back before season's end) and if it puts you over your roster cap you could lose the FA you signed (any and/or all of them) and be fined.
So while I'm allowing this, be careful with it. If this gets abused I'll take this away. The Padres are our guinea pig
